World’s New Longest Indoor Snow Slope Announced

A recently opened Chinese indoor ski resort operated by Club Med has announced a 'phase 2' development which will see it add the world's longest indoor snow slope.

The combined slope area of the existing and new slopes will also give the new greatest indoor snow surface in the world at over a mile, as well as the biggest indoor vertical.

NZ resorts open with top up of fresh snow

This weekend saw most ski resorts in New Zealand open for the season, albeit with limited terrain. However, last night saw some new snowfall.

Coronet Peak celebrated by offering the first skiers and snowboarders Mons Royale 'First On Chair' tshirts, while Mt Hutt reported 3cm of new snow on Tuesday.

Riksgransen Re-Opening for Summer Solstice Skiing

There are more northerly ski lifts, but in terms of full ski resort facilities, the world's most northerly centre, Sweden's Riksgränsen, is re-opening for skiing and boarding this week, but for four days only.

The famous ski centre, which markets itself as 'Europe's spring skiing capital' is reporting the late June snow as still 70cm deep. There'll be five runs, serviced by three lifts, available as well as freeride terrain opportunities.

Andorra Unhappy Not To Be Awarded An FIS World Championships

Andorra has gone public on its unhappiness at being unsuccessful in its bid to host either the 2029 or 2031 World Championships, recently awarded to Narvik and Val Gardena.

It's been wanting to host them for many years now and has got as far as staging the World Cup Finals as well as World Cup races and has previously even been part of a plans for a joint bid with France to host the Winter Olympics.

All Open Aussie Resorts Have Runs Skiable After Fresh Snowfall

A week after Australia's ski season began with half of centres opening without being able to offer any snowsports, this weekend sees all open centres offering some snowsports.

The improvement comes after a week of cold temperatures allowing for more snowmaking, as well as some light, natural snowfall.

New Zealand’s 2024 Season Starts Tomorrow

New Zealand's 2024 season was due to have got started today with Coronet Peak and Mt Hutt due to open, however, unfortunately, neither have managed to do so.

As with Australia a week ago it's a mixed picture though, with Coronet Peak (pictured above on Wednesday), already having announced it was delaying for an unspecified period whilst awaiting "a few more centimetres"of snow. Mt Hutt though had planned to open limited terrain today but has been forced to delay doing so due to rain.

Early Season conditions improving 'Down Under' in Australia and New Zealand

New snow and a fall in temperatures in Australian resorts has arrived just at the right time for resort openings.

Perisher has reported close to 30cm of snow in the last week, with more lifts due to open this weekend. Similar levels of new snow have been reported at Falls Creek and Hotham in Victoria.

20cm of Summer Snowfall in 24hrs in the Alps

What's been a mostly cold spring in the Alps has seen a second big "powder alarm" warranting snowfall on high slopes overnight in just under a fortnight.

Austria's Hintertux, which already has the deepest snow in the region at 5 metres, posted a 20cm overnight accumulation on its year round ski slopes this morning.

Australia's Ski Season Picks Up With Fresh Snowfall

Australia's ski areas are looking a whole lot better than they did on the ski season opening day last Saturday as several days of forecast snowfall has gotten underway, along with much lower temperatures than in recent weeks.

Australia always begins its season with a three day long-weekend in early June that includes a public holiday on the Monday (yesterday) to celebrate King Charles III's birthday. Snow cover is often problematic this early in the winter and its not unusual for there to be little or no snow cover, although from media reports this year you'd think it had never happened before.

‘The Brits’ to return to Mayrhofen, Austria in March 2025

British snowsports premier freestyle competition 'The Brits' will take place in Mayrhofen, Austria next winter.

It will be the first time the event has taken place in the Alps since 2019, when Laax in Switzerland was the venue.

Val d'Isère Summer Ski Season Underway

Val d'Isère has opened for a month of summer glacier skiing, its 61st summer ski season although some were missed due to poor conditions. This year it is reported to have 4km of slopes open at present and a healthy 4m base.

Val d'Isère opening means France currently has two summer ski areas available, with Les 2 Alpes having operated through May, aiming to continue to July 7th.That equal's the two currently open in Austria (Hintertux and Molltal) and is one less than the three centres (Fonna, Galdhopiggen and Stryn) open in Norway.

Vail Resorts Increase Sales Income With Fewer Skiers

The world's largest ski resort operating company, Vail Resorts, which operates more than 40 ski areas in four countries on three continents, increased sales revenue by 1% despite seeing a 17% drop in skier visits in winter 2023-24.

The company credited income from ski school, dining and rental spending held up despite fewer skiers and ticket sales.

FIS Alpine World Ski Championships For 2029 and 2031 Announced

The trend of announcing multiple winners of big ski events in future years set by the Winter Olympics with the FIS announcing the next two rather than the usual one future host of the Alpine World Ski Championships.

Meeting in Reykjavik the FIS Council voted for Narvik in northern Norway to host the 2029 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and for Val Gardena to host the event in 2031.

Mt Ruapehu's Ski Areas Return to Solo Operations for 2024 Season

New Zealand's Mt Ruapehu ski area will return to operating as two separately run ski areas – Tūroa and Whakapapa this winter.

Previously Mt Ruapehu encompassed both ski areas, run as a 'single' resort although physically separate and claimed to be New Zealand's largest ski area by combining the stats.

Super Angel Express Chairlift Coming To Banff Sunshine

Canada's ski season only ended last Monday at Banff's Sunshine Village ski area, but the Albertan ski area that boasts the country's longest ski season had already started work on its new lift project for the start of winter 24-25 – just over five months away, a week beforehand.

Australia’s Highest Ski Area’s 2024 Delays Season Start After Fire Damage

A fire at the sewage processing plant at Australia's highest ski area, Charlotte Pass near Perisher in New South Wales, has had to delay its planned season start in three weeks' time.

A statement from the centre's operators explained that the fire damage occurring so close to the start of the season posed "present significant challenges," adding that "Following the fire …the village unable to process any wastewater from taps, showers or toilets at this time. …Charlotte Pass Village remains closed to the public and no access is available."

Southern Africa and New Zealand’s 2024 Seasons Start – Kind Of

New Zealand's Whakapapa ski area has opened a small area of snow in its Happy Valley area, which is served by a conveyor lift, the first lift-accessed skiing in the country this year.

"Please note that only a section of Happy Valley is open for skiing and snowboarding; the rest (except our sledding area) is still closed. Keep in mind that we don't offer any rentals or lessons for today and tomorrow, so please bring your own gear," a resort statement explains.
