Ski Train Service From London to the Alps Rides Again

The old ski train service, now re-branded 'Eurostar Snow' is back this winter after the original service's pandemic cancellation.

The "prices from £99 one way" is the same as the old service, but the removal of a direct train from St Pancras to Moutiers or Bourg St Maurice is different, with all passengers needing to change at Lille Europe station in France.

Val d’Isere Launches Loyalty Club

The world famous French ski resort of Val d'Isère has launched its own loyalty club for avid fans and frequent visitors to the resort.

Describing 'Val d'Isère Le Club', as "…a way of giving back to our most loyal ambassadors," a resort spokesperson said that the new club "…offers taster sessions, exclusive events, behind-the-scenes adventures and plenty more."

Les 2 Alpes Confirm October Opening

Les 2 Alpes say they plan to open their glacier ski slopes for two weeks in the autumn, from Saturday 21 October to Sunday 5 November 2023, conditions permitting.

The highest part of the ski area (3,200m to 3,600m – the highest lift-served ski area in France) will be open for skiers and boarders, conditions permitting as well as to pedestrian visitors. International athletes will also be there to train for the 2023–24 season, with uplift improved by a new ski lift: Le Dôme Sud which replaces the old Le Soreiller lift.

Fresh August Snowfall in the Alps

The recent weeks of very hot weather in the Alps have come to an end with snowfall reported on glaciers for the final few days of meteorological summertime.

Freezing point reached a record high 5,300m in the Swiss Alps a few weeks ago and double digit plus temperatures were reported on glaciers but there's been a dramatic drop in temperatures back below freezing over the past few days.

South American Super Snow Storm Dumps Up To 4m

A huge snowstorm that hit Ski Portillo over five days this week has deposited up to 4 metres of snow on the region's slopes.

The numbers are in many cases "guesstimates" and still coming in but the totals are huge whether official or not.

Utah Resort To Nearly Triple in Size to Become 5th Biggest in US

[b]Deer Valley Resort in Utah has announced it will more than double in size over the next few years to become the fifth biggest in the US.

The expansion means that the town of Park City will have two of the five largest ski areas in the US with a combined acreage of more than 13,000 acres.

Italy’s Sole Glacier Summer Ski Area Closes Due to Heat in the Alps

Italy's Passo Stelvio has announced it will close for at least four days as a consequence of the current high temperatures to high altitude in the Alps.[/b]

Earlier this week Swiss meteorologists found the freezing point isotherm had reached a new record high of almost 5,300m, nearly 500 metres higher than the top of Mont Blanc. This new high was about 100 metres high than the previous record high set 13 months previously.

US Ski Area Reports First Snowfall of 23-24

The small ski area of Pomerelle in Idaho has posted webcam images of a short-lived snow covering that appeared in the middle of the night earlier this week.

The snow, which is reported to have disappeared by the morning, is believed to be the first clearly recorded in the run up to the start of the 23-24 season in North America, the webcam image was taken at 1.30am. However skiers in Utah say they saw snow on high peaks a few weeks ago.

Les Menuires Announce Gondola Upgrade

Les Menuires in the 3 Valleys will upgrade its Roc 1 gondola with new seats and new plexiglass for the coming winter, leading to a more comfortable ride.

However the big announcement is that 300m² of photovoltaic panels are being installed on the roof of the Roc 2 garage, generating the powers to run the lift!

Canadian Ski Area’s New Chairlift “A Game Changer”

[b]Canada's Marmot Basin has confirmed its new Knob Quad will go into service this winter, replacing the old double chair.

The resort, near Jasper in Alberta, new lift will be a fixed-grip quad, but with a conveyor-loading system so it can run faster.

Alpine Coaster Unveiled at Les Gets

Big White Shuts Down Summer Operations to Host Wildfire Evacuees

Big White ski area in British Columbia has shut down its summer operation in order to focus on supporting evacuees arriving at the resort from the nearby city of Kelowna which is being threatened by a serious forest fire.

The McDougall Creek wildfire has grown to over 10,000 hectares and destroyed homes in West Kelowna, which has been largely evacuated.

Fresh Snowfall in Australia

Australian ski areas are reporting fresh snowfall, for many their third falls in a week, bringing to an end a period of warmer, drier weather which dominated through the latter half of July and start of August.

Selwyn ski area had been forced to close its skiing for lack of snow several weeks ago but now says it expects to re-open its ski slopes tomorrow thanks to the new snow, which is continuing to fall.

Canadian and US Resorts Publish Target Season Start Dates

[b]A growing number of leading North American ski areas have published their intended 23-24 season opening dates this Fall, so long as mother nature plays ball.

November 10th looks set to be a big day with California's Mammoth Mountain, Alberta's Lake Louise as well as Breckenridge and Vail in Colorado all planning to open that day.

Cairngorm Funicular Legal Cases Settled Out Of Court

Three complex legal cases that related to the original design and construction of the Cairngorm funicular railway in the 1990s and early 2000s have reached an out-of-court settlement.

The legal cases began when government development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), which owns Cairngorm Estate and commissioned the funicular, was forced to shut it down in 2018, 17 years after it opened after a construction cost of £19.5 million, after safety inspections found issues with concrete track supports.

New Quad For Las Vegas Ski Resort

Nevada's Lee Canyon resort has announced a $7 million spend on resort upgrades for the coming winter.

The ski area, located just 45 minutes from the infamous Las Vegas Strip will invest the bulk of the cash in a new quad chairlift. There'll also be increased parking and a new conveyor lift to for beginners.

No Autumn Skiing in Val Senales This Year

Italy's Val Senales, which usually offers autumn glacier skiing from early September, has announced that it won't be opening for the 23-24 season until December.

However unlike Tignes in France, which appears to have similarly decided to give up on autumn skiing, this may be an autumn 2023 only decision.

Last North American Area Open For 22-23 Announces Season Ending Sunday

Timberline ski area in Oregon, the only ski area still open to the public for the 22-23 ski season in North America has announced that this coming Sunday 13th August will be its last day.

Timberline, which offers skiing and boarding on the Palmer permanent snowfield on Mt Hood, is usually the last area open in North America and often the only real choice in July and August.

Southern Hemisphere Overtakes Northern For Deepest Snowpack

Two months into the southern hemisphere's 2023 ski season, Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand has posted the world's deepest snowpack at an open ski area.

The resort's Tūroa ski area hit 255cm (102") on Thursday, overtaking Switzerland's Saas-Fee which has been posting 250cm (100") since it opened for its 23-23 ski season a month ago.

Australian Ski Centres See Much Needed Snowfall

Australian ski areas are celebrating after long-awaited snowfall arrived over the past 24 hours.

The falls aren't huge so fall but appear to signal a change in the weather with more forecast next week. In Victoria there was 10cm of fresh snowfall for Hotham and 5cm at Falls Creek.

Loveland Sets Off 23-24 Snowmaking Start Countdown Clock

Loveland ski area, one of the world's highest, located in Colorado, USA, has set its "start of snowmaking for next season" clock going on its website at: https://skiloveland.com/

The resort joins in an annual battle to be the first in the US to open each fall, and aims to start snowmaking at the end of September, so long as it's cold enough.

More Fresh August Snowfall in the Alps

There's been further snowfall on high peaks and glaciers in the Alps as the unsettled weather continues.

Germany's Zugspitze Glacier, the country's highest ski area, was the only one to measure how much had fallen, reporting a 10cm accumulation overnight (pictured above).

Eco Hotel Plan For UK’s Longest Dry Slope

A planning application for a major new hotel and spa located next to Hillend Ski Centre in Edinburgh has been submitted.

Landscape Hotels Ltd have submitted the application to build a hotel which will include "38 luxury eco-suites, individually set in the landscape and 102 traditional hotel rooms within a main hub including a presidential suite" next to the Midlothian Snowsports Centre which is itself currently in the middle of a multi-year multi-million-pound revamp into 'Destination Hillend' adding more attractions to the dry slopes such as zipwires and a mountain coaster.

Tignes Gives Up On Autumn Ski Opening

Tignes has given up on its glacier opening in Autumn, announcing it does not intend to open before 25th November this year.

The French resort used to open its ski lifts 365 days a year, weather permitting, then moved to a model when it opened from September to May then for summer skiing from June to August, so that it could say it was open for skiing every month of the year.

Cervinia To Offer Glacier Skiing Access Year Round

The Italian ski resort Cervinia has announced, "the beginning of a new era: skiing and snowboarding all year round, without interruptions."

Currently the centre offers glacier skiing for around nine months of the year in total, with 4-8 week breaks in late spring and early autumn.

Andorra’s Ski Areas Up Their Snowmaking & Add A New Slope

The Grandvalira ski area which now runs virtually all of Andorra's ski centres has announced an upgrade and expansion of its snowmaking.

"For the coming season, Grandvalitra wanted to strengthen its pumping capacities, optimize the management of water resources and also equip a new slope on the Seig sector located between the Canillo Forn and Forn Riba Escorjada sectors. The objective of the project is to further improve the snow guarantee, while offering even more optimal conditions to the resort's snow sports enthusiasts," a statement explained.

Charity Commission decides Courchevel donation by Jim Ratcliffe was legal

Earlier this week the Charity Commission closed its investigation into the Jim Ratcliffe Foundation over funding made towards the construction of the new Club des Sports building in Courchevel.

INEOS founder and CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe is worth around £30 billion, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2023, and is a very keen skier who owns properties in Courchevel.

Lake Louise Announce 100 Days To 23-24 Season Opening

Lake Louise say they plan to open for the 23-24 season on November 10th, in just under 100 days time.

The famous Canadian resort is usually one of the first in Canada, as well as all of North America, to open for the season each autumn/fall.

We're not sure if this picture is current, but conditions are good in Portillo, Chile!

August is a peak month in the southern hemisphere's ski season when all resorts aim to be fully open after snow depths have built through the first half of the season before things wind down in September, the start of spring.

Mammoth Mountain Still Open in August

Mammoth Mountain is opening into August for only the third time in its 69 year history.

The famous Californian ski area received nearly 60 feet / 20 metres of snowfall last winter and despite weeks of hot weather, still has snow lying 1-3 feet deep.
