A New Gondola In The Arlberg

Austria's huge Arlberg region, home to world famous ski resorts including Lech and St Anton, will get another new gondola next winter.

The 40-year-old Albonabahn I double chairlift in Stuben am Arlberg will be replaced by a new gondola with cabins for 8 people.

Rooftop Riding And Giant Magnifying Glass For New Zermatt Cable Car

Although a lot of the focus of news from Zermatt and Cervinia this summer is likely to be on the completion of the long-planned Alpine Crossing by ultra-modern gondola between the two resorts, with the completion of the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II will start operating between Testa Grigia and the Klein Matterhorn due to open on 1st July, a second new cable car connecting Zermatt to Furi will also go into operation a few months later, in the autumn.

Les 2 Alpes Opening for Summer Ski Season On Tuesday

French ski area Les 2 Alpes which claims the largest summer glacier ski area in the world is moving its summer ski season forward so that it runs through May and June, starting this coming Tuesday 2nd May.

"To adapt to the changes in weather patterns and to protect the glacier, SATA, the lift company, has decided to open for skiing earlier but to also close earlier (2 May to the 30 of June). However, pedestrian can still access the glacier all summer, and enjoy the breath-taking views and cooler temperatures," a resort statement explained.

Ski & Golf World Cup 2023

The annual Ski & Golf World Cup in Salzburgerland, Austria is coming up in May.

The contest sees well known Austrian and international skiers and golfers compete in a golfing competition at Zell am See, then a giant slalom on the slopes of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier above Kaprun, which is due to stay open to the end of May.

Alterra Spend at Solitude

Utah's Solitude ski area has broken both its all-time seasonal snowfall record, receiving more than 800"/20m of snowfall, and posted its longest ever season, beating its previous record 161 days and planning to stay open through to the latter half of May.

It’s Still Snowing in the Alps

But the topsy-turvy season for weather has seen April become one of the snowiest of the past six months, at leas above around 2,000m altitude.

Ski Areas in 15 Countries Staying Open Into May 2023

It's believed that nearly 100 ski areas in at least 15 countries will stay open at least to Monday, May 1st ("May Day") this year.

Austria, Norway, Switzerland and the US are likely to have the most centres open, with at least 10 each.

Test Drive a Piste Basher

The year-round Hintertux glacier in the Austrian Tirol is giving anyone who fancies it the chance to test drive a 600 hp snowcat.

The experience is offered from of charge to those who have a lift pass and take the resort's Gletscherbus 3 lift up their snow groomer test area high up at 3,250 metres above sea level.

Utah Declares State of Emergency as Record Snow Accumulation Starts to Melt

Utah's governor Spencer Cox has declared a state of emergency warning that melting snow is likely to cause months of flooding in the state.

The snowpack on Utah's mountains is currently averaging 200% the norm and several ski areas including Alta and Snowbird have posted more than 800" (20 metres) of snowfall through the season, their all-time record levels, with the snow still lying up to five metres deep.

Andorran Resort Reports Income Up, Visitor Numbers Down

Andorra's Pal Arinsal ski area, which this winter became part of Andorra and the Pyrenees' largest ski area, Grandvalira, has reported fewer skiers, due primarily to periods of poor snow cover, but income up as those visiting each spent more on average.

Tignes Announces 5 Week 2023 Summer Ski Season

Tignes, one of three remaining summer ski destinations in France, says it will aim to open for summer skiing and boarding from 17th June to 23rd July, 2023.

The resort is one of the last still open for winter 22-23 in the Alps and will stay open to May 6th. It is also posting the deepest snowpack in Europe, lying 4.5 metres (15 feet) deep on is glacier with more late season snowfall forecast over the coming week.

Second Quebec Ski Area Posts Record Season Snowfall

Following the news at the start of the month that eastern Canada's largest ski area, Mont Tremblant, had seen record snowfall, a second Quebec ski area has said it has had an all-time record snowfall total for the season.

Massif du Sud said it was approaching a 750cm snowfall total earlier this month, which it said is a record for the province, and that it had also had a 13% increase in its skier numbers daily visitors.

Heavy Late Season Snowfall on High Slopes in The Alps

Ski areas across the Alps and Dolomites have been experiencing cold temperatures and snowfall down to low-elevations over the past four days.

Snow totals reported on the highest slopes, around 3,000m altitude, have continued to build with some ski areas now reporting as much as 90cm (3 feet) of fresh snowfall in 72 hours. Skiers and boarders have reported "mid-winter conditions on the slopes.

Aspen Terrain Expansion For Next Season

A new terrain expansion at Aspen Mountain will see the famous ski town's original ski area add about 20% to its skiable area.

Opening for the 2023-2024 season, the area called Pandora, which has been skied for years by ski tourers and freeriders, will now be accessed via a high-speed quad.

Free Tickets on Offer For Birmingham & London Snow Shows

Tickets have been made available for next Autumn's snow shows in Birmingham and London, and the organisers say there are a limited amount of free tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The National Snow Show at the NEC Birmingham is back for its third staging in its new format but the London Snow Show at ExCeL London will be the first in the capital since the Telegraph Ski and Snowboard Festival was cancelled shortly before the pandemic began.

Five Colorado Ski Areas Staying Open Into May

A number of ski areas in Colorado have already ended their 22-23 seasons, and the majority will close at the end of the day this coming Sunday 16th, but five ski areas have confirmed they'll be staying open into May, or beyond.

Crested Butte, Telluride and Wolf Creek – which had previously been posting the deepest snow in the state – are among the areas that have already closed.

Pre-Season Snow in Australia

Australian ski areas have been celebrating pre-season snowfall over the Easter weekend.

Accumulations have been measured in millimetres rather than centimetres but have been enough to cause excitement with just two months until the 2023 ski season is due to begin there.

America’s Summer Ski Area To Open From Final Weekend of May

[b]The Beartooth Basin summer ski area located on the Montana/Wyoming border says it plans to open for its 2023 season over the Memorial Day holiday long weekend in the US at the end of May.

Originally established as the Red Lodge International Summer Racing Camp, in the mid-1960s by Austrians Pepi Gramshammer, Eric Sailer and Anderl Molterer, the centre is the only one in North America to only be open in the summer ski months.

Firefighters Race on Skis For Charity

190 firefighters in full gear convened at Arapahoe Basin resort in Colorado recently for the 16th-annual Firehose Relay.

The race is a charity fundraiser to benefit the Children's Hospital Colorado Burn Camps Program, a program that allows children burn victims to go to camp.

Sun Peaks Announces New Chairlift, Adding Runs, For 24-25

Sun Peaks ski resort in BC, which claims the second-largest ski area in Canada, has announced it's installing a brand-new high speed detachable quad chairlift and that it will cut additional runs.

The new West Bowl Express will be located in the upper reaches of Mt. Tod and will provide enhanced access to a popular area of the resort known for quality snow and scenic vistas.

Mammoth Beats All-Time Snowfall Record & Still Has World’s Deepest Snowpack

Mammoth Mountain in California has officially surpassed its season snowfall record, previously set in the 2010/11 season, with an incredible 17.65 metres (58 feet) of snowfall in total so far this season.

Along with fellow Californian ski area The Palisades, the resort has already extended its winter season through July and is yet to set a closing date so visitors will be skiing and riding well into the summer months.

Winter Park May Stay Open Beyond May

Colorado's Winter Park Resort has announced that it will close some of its slopes on Sunday, April 23, 2023, but will keep the Mary Jane side of the mountain open as long as possible for late-season skiing and riding.

"Weather and snow conditions will ultimately dictate the close of the season, but based on consistent snowfall throughout the season and a current solid base of nearly six feet, the resort anticipates a closing day well into May and possibly beyond," a Winter park statement explains.

Zermatt Cervinia Announce Second Attempt At Downhill World Cup Opening

The attempt to kick off the speed skiing events earlier in the World Cup season than before, which failed to happen at the first attempt last autumn, is to be re-attempted in November.

A new cross-border downhill ski course, the world's highest, was created between Zermatt in Switzerland and Cervinia in Italy last year with the plan to stage four Men's and Women's World Cup downhill races at the end of October and start of November 2022, about a month before the traditional start for the speed events in Lake Louise, Canada and Beaver Creek, Colorado, USA.

Snowy Start to April in the Alps

Ski areas with slopes above 2,000m are reporting heavy snowfall and low temperatures to start April.

As with the snowfalls a week ago, resorts in France and northern and western Italy and Switzerland have reported the biggest accumulations, although the snowfall is widespread.
