More US Ski Areas Change Names From “Sensitivity to Native American Cultures”

Following the renaming of California's Squaw Valley to The Palisades and Vermont's Suicide Six to Saskadena Six (for sensitivity to mental health issues), two small ski areas in Michigan are to be renamed out of "sensitivity to Native American cultures".

Ski Resort Building First Observatory At Top Of Ski Mountain in US

Snow King ski resort at Jackson in Wyoming is building an observatory at the top of its lifts.

It's believed it will be the first observatory located on top of a ski resort in North America.

The observatory will feature a seven metre (24-foot) AstroHaven dome along housing a one-metre PlaneWave telescope, one of the largest in the world.

New Year Ski Holiday Prices “Much Lower Than Normal"

Ski holiday companies are reporting that holidays over the coming New Year 22-23 will be "much cheaper" than usual due to a combination of factors.

The first is that the main holiday weekend of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will fall on a weekend so for most holidays with Saturday or Sunday changeover days it means people will need to travel on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day themselves – which are the least popular days for travel.

Major Canadian and US Resorts Announce 22-23 Season Opening Dates

A number of leading North American resorts have announced their target opening dates for the coming ski season, in many cases less than three months away.

In Colorado Breckenridge and Vail will open on November 11th and Keystone will aim to open in less than two month's time in "mid-October" – as soon as there's enough snow fallen or machine-made once cold enough.

Australian Ski Areas Report Another Big Snowfall as Season Enters Final Month

Australian ski areas were in celebratory mood on Tuesday after big snowfall accumulations were reported to start the day.

Thredbo reported the biggest accumulation so far with 28cm (11 inches) of powder. Mt Baw Baw said they'd had 25cm (10") of fresh snowfall so far and that it was still falling, the country's largest resort, Perisher, 15cm (6 inches) more.

First Snowfall of 22-23 Pre-Season Reported in Colorado

The first dusting of snow was spotted on some high peaks in Colorado earlier this week, instantly raising anticipation for the 22-23 ski season in North America.

The only ski centre still operating outdoors on the continent, is Timberline with slopes high on Mt Hood in Oregon, but it says it will end its 10-month long 21-22 season this coming Sunday.

Down To One Ski Area Still Open For Summer Skiing in Europe

The early closure of Norway's Fonna summer ski area has left just a small strip of thin snow open to skiers and boarders in Europe at one remaining ski area still open, Hintertux in the Austrian Tirol (library pic). It's the lowest number since summer skiing began more than 50 years ago.

China Has Most Snow Areas Open in August

Fresh Snowfall Helps Australian Ski Areas Re-Set For Second Half Of 2022 Season

After damaging storms hit Australian ski areas a week ago, bringing heavy rain and gales, the resorts have been seeing increasingly snowy weather since, bringing slopes back up to prime condition.

Friday morning saw skiers wake to find fresh snowfall lying with up to 17cm (7 inches) reported overnight.

Famous Comedy Festival Moves to The Alps

The famous Montreux Comedy Festival will take up residence in the French ski resort of Les Gets this winter, joining the existing Altitude Comedy Festival that's staged each spring in Mayrhofen to increase the options for skiers and boarders who enjoy a bit of apres live comedy in the mountains.

North America’s 21-22 Season To End August 21st

The final ski area still open for the 21-22 ski season, Timberline in Oregon, has announced it will end its 9-month opening this year on Sunday, August 21st.

The resort, which operates summer skiing on the permanent Palmer Snowfield on Mt Hood has one of the world's longest ski seasons and kept operating through spring and summer this year when many of the Western North American ski centres that usually operate to late spring/early summer were forced to close earlier than usual by the hot weather. The continent's only summer-only ski area, Beartooth Basin on the Montana/Wyoming border, also opted to skip this year.

Heavy Snow Hits Australian Slopes After Stormy Weather

The impact of a violent storm which brought gales and flooding to Australian ski slopes on Thursday and Friday appears to have been short-lived as temperatures dropped and heavy snowfall followed in its wake.

Perisher reported 15cm (6") of fresh snowfall overnight on Friday/Saturday, Falls Creeks (Pictured above on Saturday 6th August) 17cm (7"), while Mt Hotham reported 28cm (11"). Snow is expected to keep falling through Sunday and a return to the sunny conditions that have dominated the first half of the season from next week.

US Based Company Completes Take Over Of Famous Swiss Ski Resort

The unusual situation of an American company taking a majority stake in a Swiss ski lift company has been completed with the world's biggest ski resort operator Vail Resorts Inc completing its purchase of a majority stake in Andermatt Swiss Alps AG at a cost of 149 million Swiss Francs. The money means Vail Resorts now owns a 55 per cent stake in Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG

New 6-Seat Chairlift For Arapahoe Basin

Arapahoe Basin, one of the world's highest altitude ski resorts in the Colorado Rockies and usually one of the first to open in North America each ski season is busy installing a fast new queue-gobbling chairlift ahead of next season.

The resort, which typically opens in late October and has a seven-months-plus ski season is upgrading its old Lenawee fixed-grip triple chairlift to a new detachable six pack from Leitner-Poma.

Big Snowfall Means Snowy Start to August in Australia

Australian ski areas are celebrating after a big snowfall brought deep powder conditions for the first week of August.

Conditions were already good to excellent across the country's ski slopes after the snowiest start to the season in more than two decades at the start of June. Most areas were already fully open with a healthy snowpack.
