Indoor Snow 'Road Test' For Supercars

An uphill drive in an indoor snow centre organised by car selling site CarWow had a different spin on it to previous cars-on-indoor-snow tests.

The site organised for a pair of Audi R8 V10s to drive up the slope of The Snow Centre in Tamworth with the aim of seeing how the slightly-different powertrains perform under pressure.

Canada’s Season Prepares to Launch …With Heavy Snowfall

Lake Louise (pictured above on Thursday) and Mt Norquay are expected to be the first ski areas to open for Canada's 22-23 ski seasons next Friday.

The two Banff resorts in Alberta have set 'tentative opening dates" of 4th November and the good news is both have seen heavy snowfall in recent days with more in the forecast. Accumulations of more than 30cm (a foot) were reported in the past 24 hours with more snow falling.

Third Colorado Ski Area Announces October Opening

Colorado's Winter Park Resort (pictured below yesterday) has announced its earliest ever opening date, next Monday 31st October – or Halloween.

"How spooky is that? Terrain will be limited, but don't let that scare you," said a spokesperson.

9 of 12 Planned World Cup Opening Competitions Cancelled

Sadly, nine of the 12 planned FIS World Cup season opening competitions planned in Europe over the final weekends of October and start of November have had to be cancelled due to snow or weather conditions.

The first World Cup freeskiing events took place on Friday 22nd at Chur in Switzerland (above) on snow brought in from the occasion and the Alpine Skiing World Cup Tour successfully started on Sunday at its traditional opening venue of Solden with the men's first GS race won by Switzerland's Marco Odermatt. The Women's race on Saturday had to be cancelled though due to poor visibility and warm temperatures.

Up To 2 Feet of October Snowfall In Western US and Canada

A major storm has brought up to a foot (30cm) of fresh snowfall to Western North America, in some cases more than was forecast.

Although it was Colorado where the 22-23 ski season kicked off on Sunday, heavier snowfall was reported further north in Utah, Wyoming and Montana and over the Canadian border in BC and Alberta, the province where Canada's season will most likely begin in just over a week's time at Lake Louise.

Colorado Opens For the Season

Two Colorado ski areas have skiers on the slopes this weekend – one the general public – the other just race teams training.

Copper Mountain opened Saturday and had members of the US ski squad on its slopes for pre-season training (pictured) while Arapahoe Basin opens to the general skiing public on Sunday.

Val Thorens May Be First Ski Area to Open in France this Winter

With glacier ski areas Les 2 Alpes and Tignes both deciding to postpone opening this October, its looking like Val Thorens might be the first resort to open for the season in France this autumn.

Europe's highest altitude resort will open for its 50th full season with its Grande Première opening festival in four weeks' time on November 19th and 20th.

New gondola for Ischgl & Sean Paul confirmed for opening concert

The ski resort of Ischgl in Austria will open their new Furglerblick 8-person gondola in December.

The new gondola will take skiers from 1142m to 2570m in just over four minutes. From the top, skiers and snowboarders will have easier access to a larger off-piste area and a new blue run.

Sweden Next Country to Open for 22-23

Sweden, home to Scandinavia's largest ski centre at Åre, is expected to be the next country to open for the 2022-23 ski season, this coming weekend.

The country's Kåbdalis and Idre Fjäll ski centres are expected to open, using snow farming – recycling snow saved from last winter and stored under cover through the summer – to create ski runs.

Details of New London Ski Show In Autumn 2023 Released

Plans for a new ski show in London next October 2023 have been announced.

The show will be run by Raccoon Media Group who have been organising the revived NEC ski show in Birmingham the past two years, along with outdoor sports shows in the UK and USA.

First Six-Seat Highspeed Chairlift For Ski Area with 636 Foot Vertical

A US ski area with 636 feet (194 metres) of vertical is to have a major lift upgrade for winter 2023-24 with the region's first high-speed six-seater chairlift installed, replacing three old lifts.

The new lift is going in at the Jackson Creek Summit area which makes up Snowriver Mountain Resort in Michigan with two other areas. It will be the first high-speed detachable lift in the Upper Peninsular area.

Indoor Snow Centres Announce plans to Stay Open (or Close) Despite (or Due To) Ener

The energy crisis in Europe resulting from the Ukraine War has led to concerns about high-energy using non-essential businesses like indoor snow centres being able to operate this winter.

Germany is one of the three largest operators on indoor snow centres along with The Netherlands and the UK and the country's centres have begun clarifying whether they will be able to open or have to close this winter.

Lift Upgrades in the Zillertal Arena

A new 8-seater chairlift will open this winter in the Zillertal Arena this winter as part of an ongoing run of upgrades.

The Zillertal Arena is the largest ski area around the Zillertal valley in Austria with just over 160 kilometres (100 miles) of piste with 50 lifts and a combined uplift capacity of 80,000 people every hour.

Skiers From Overseas Able To Visit Japan For First Winter Since 2019-20

Japan has fully opened its doors to tourists after more than two-and-a-half years of pandemic isolation, meaning international skiers can return to the country's 500+ resorts for the first time since early in winter 2019-20.

The country had allowed visitors to return in June, but only as part of organised groups, and only half a million had entered this way over the past four months, compared to more than 30 million visiting the country in 2019.

French 22-23 October Season Start on Hold

A dozen glacier ski areas have opened in Austria, Italy, Norway and Switzerland and two more centres have opened using snow farming in northern Finland, but the start of the 22-23 ski season in France appears to be currently on hold.

Two glaciers – Europe's largest for winter sports at Les 2 Alpes and Tignes (pictured top) – has originally targeted the coming weekend as their hoped for season start dates but that has now slid.

Saas Fee Opens Glacier For Autumn Skiing To All

Saas Fee has re-opened its glacier for autumn skiing to all from Friday, 7th October.

The resort's ski season is one of the world's longest, with the ski runs opening in mid-July and staying open for eight months to late April.

This year however the impact of the low snowfall last winter and high temperatures even at 4,000m altitude meant Saas Fee decided to limit what slopes it could open to race team training for the past few months. Britain's Dave Ryding was among those training there.

Yet To Be Built Saudi Arabian Ski Area Awarded 2029 Asian Winter Games

The Olympic Council of Asia, meeting in Cambodia, has awarded Saudi Arabia the chance to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at the country's planned Trojena ski resort.

Trojena is part of a planned carbon-neutral $500 billion mega-city called Neom promoted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman but as yet largely unstarted, according to media reports.

Canada Removes All COVID Travel Restrictions

Canada has removed all restrictions on incoming travel, removing restrictions put in place due to the pandemic.

The country had previous re-opened its borders more than a year ago, but then re-introduced random testing in the summer at a limited number of international airports including those most used by skiers such as Vancouver for West Coast resorts like Whistler Blackcomb, Calgary for Alberta ski areas like Banff and Lake Louise and Montreal for Mont Tremblant.

Fresh Pre-Season Snowfall in Colorado

Snow has begun falling in Colorado in what is expected to be a snowy weekend for high slopes in the state – while temperatures down in Denver remain in the 70s Fahrenheit.

Copper Mountain (pictured above on 30th September), due to open for its 22-23 season in a little over a month, said it had measured 3" of snow on its upper slopes by Friday morning, the last day of September, with more forecast.
