Aspen Terrain Expansion On Schedule

Work on the expansion of Aspen Mountain in Colorado is on course for completion in time for the start of the 2023-24 season, according to an Aspen Times report from the famous ski town. It's the first big terrain expansion for Aspen's home mountain, one of four that make up the resort's full ski area, for nearly 40 years.

Dry Ski Slope Opens For Summer Skiing at Eastern Canada's Largest Resort

[b]Quebec's Mont Tremblant, the most visited ski area in Eastern North America, has added a dry slope for summer skiing.

Opening on August 18th, Tremblant will be offering the chance to learn to ski or snowboard and carve on a synthetic surface supplied by Italian firm, Neveplast.

Fresh Snowfall in the Alps as Fires Rage By The Med

High ski slopes in the northern Alps are reporting fresh snowfall above about 2500m altitude today.

Zugspitze near Garmisch Partenkirchen in southern Germany is pictured above but snowfall has been reported on glaciers and mountain peaks over a wide area.

New Orient-Express to the French Alps

The direct Travelski train charter between London and French ski areas may have been cancelled but the original icon of the rails, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, will be running four new winter journeys between Paris and the French Alps this coming winter.

America's New Longest, Fastest Gondola Opening this Winter

A three year transformation project at Steamboat Springs ski area in Colorado is moving ahead with the completion of a new gondola, beginners' area and other facilities set to be unveiled at the start of the coming winter.

Steamboat's so-called 'Full Steam Ahead' project will see a huge terrain expansion meaning the resort's ski area become the second largest resort in Colorado.

Robbie Williams To Play Schladming Ski Opening

Robbie Williams has been unveiled as the act performing at the Schladming Ski Opening 2023 that will launch the 23-24 ski season.

"After a 3-year break, there will finally be another big party in the Schladming-Dachstein region at the start of the season," a Schladming spokesperson said.

Final French Summer Ski Area Open Ending 2023 Season

Tignes, the only ski area currently open for snowsports in France, is expected to end its 2023 summer ski season today, as scheduled.

It joins Les 2 Alpes and Val d'Isere, the two other French ski areas still offering summer skiing (down from around 10 in the 1990s), which ended their 2023 seasons a fortnight ago.

California’s 22-23 Ski Season Extending Into August

Mammoth Mountain has announced it will be staying open into August following the huge snowfalls there last winter. The resort received 715 inches of snow – over 18 metres.

Mammoth, along with Californian neighbour The Palisades, had an initial target of staying open into July. The Palisades closed after Independence Day but Mammoth said it intended to remain open "through July". It has now finally named a closing date – August 6th.

Val d'Isère Collects 300kg of Rubbish From Slopes

140 Volunteers scouring the slopes of Val d'Isère has removed 300kg of garbage on the resort's annual environment day.

The day was organised by the French Mountain Riders group which has been organising similar clean ups at resorts across the country for the last two decades, as well as leading many other initiatives to promote the cleaner, greener operation of the country's ski areas and cut CO2 emissions.

Growing Opposition to Ski Area’s Permanent Lift Closures

The decision to close the main lifts at the Sattel-Hochstuckli ski area in Central Switzerland is reporting to be causing unease with most local residents.

The decision has been made to permanently close the resort's highest lifts but to keep its nursery slopes open, so that ski school lessons can still be given with the resort's focus entirely on beginners and families.

Ski Holiday Searches Increase As Temperatures Peak

Ski holiday provider Club Med has reported a 21% jump in searches for ski holidays next winter within 24 hours on Monday-Tuesday.

The famous French holiday company, now part of a Chinese owned group, is putting the surge down to a response to record heat levels in much of Europe, putting people off booking summer holidays and making them think snow.

Perisher Plans first-ever Slush Cup

2023 Men’s Downhill at Lake Louise Cancelled

The FIS World Cup Men's Downhill at Lake Louise in BC, Canada has been dropped from the 2023-24 race calendar this coming winter.

Doubts over the future of the event, the traditional start of the speed racing season for decades, had been circulating for several years.

Saas Fee Opens For Summer Skiing To All

Saas Fee has opened its glacier summer ski area for its 2023 season and this year says the slopes are open to everyone.

Last summer the centre was initially opened just to race reams for training as there was severely limited terrain due to the exceptionally hot soring and summer in the Alps.

TV Show Based on Gwyneth Paltrow Ski Collision Court Case in Production

A TV show based on the 2023 civil court case between Gwyneth Paltrow and retired doctor Terry Sanderson, resulting from a ski collision three years earlier at Deer Valley in Utah has been announced by Discovery+.

The civil case was brought by the retired optometrist against Paltrow following a decision that there was no criminal case to answer on the 2016 collision on the slopes. Sanderson sought $300,000 from the actress, alleging she causing him permanent traumatic brain injury. Paltrow counter-sued Sanderson for $1 plus legal costs, claiming he caused the accident. The court was played out in worldwide media in late March and early April earlier this year. Paltrow won.

Direct Rail Service From London To French Alps Cancelled (Again)

The direct rail connection between London and the French Alps won't run this winter, unless a new operation emerges.

The direct Eurostar 'ski train' service was cancelled before the pandemic, but had been replaced by a charter service to selected resorts run by a company operated by Travelski, an off-shoot of the huge Compagnie des Alpes group, which runs ski areas served by the train.

Archaeology Checks Delays New Cornwall Dry Ski Centre

easyJet Resuming London Southend-Geneva Ski Flights

easyJet are to recommence flights between London Southend and Geneva this winter, a route last operated in 2020. The service was initially suspended due to the pandemic, but did not resume last winter.

The service will resume on December 16th, 2023 and run twice-weekly on Saturdays and Wednesdays throughout the winter, with launch fares starting from £22.99 one way, excluding baggage.

Les Arcs’ Transarc Lift Being Upgraded after 32 Years

The well-known Transarc people-mover that links Arc 1800 and Col de la Chal at 2600 m is currently being upgraded at Les Arcs, increasing the comfort and capacity on the route as well as the speed of the trip.

The current Leitner-built Transarc lift opened in 1991 with 15 person cabins travelling at 5 metres per second.

Major Snowstorm Begins in Australia

[b]A major snowstorm is getting underway in Australia and is expected to last for several days and deliver up to half-a-metre of snowfall.

It's the latest and potentially biggest yet in a series of storms over the past month that have set the country's ski resorts up well for the start of the 2023 season. Most centres already have 50-75% of their slopes open with several announcing they have all their lifts operating for the first time since the pre-pandemic 2019 season.

World’s Oldest (Ex-)Skier Turns 106

George Jedenoff, who kept skiing past the age of 100 at Alta ski area in Utah, has celebrated his 106th birthday.

"We chatted with George earlier this week and wished him a happy birthday. George may be done skiing, but he's still a big part of Alta and the Wild Old Bunch," an Alta spokesperson said.

Two New Gondolas For Italy’s Kronplatz

Italy's Kronplatz ski area in the Dolomiti Superski region is one of the big ski area success stories of the 21st century and one of just a handful of ski areas in the world operating at least 15 gondola lifts.

In fact in Kronplatz's case 20 of its lifts, about two thirds of the total, are gondolas.

“Superb” Summer Ski and Board Conditions on Alpine Glaciers

Snow conditions on European glaciers are reported to be much better this summer than last, thanks to colder, snowier weather in spring compared to spring 2022.

"The snow conditions are superb, I was on the summits all the weekend and it was really good. The race teams athletes are happy with the training conditions," said Héléna Hospital who works at les 2 Alpes.

Australian Ski Resort Opens all Lifts for First Time Since 2019

In what they're describing as "a pivotal moment since pandemic closures, "Australia's Hotham ski area has opened its Gotcha, Keogh's and Orchard Chairlifts for the first time since 2019.

It means that the resort has all lifts turning at once for the first time since winter 2019. Over the last three seasons their operation was limited or prevented altogether by successive pandemic closures or occasionally an issue with too little snow cover to open everything.

Perisher, Australia, has all four ski areas interlinked as of today...

July is traditionally when the southern hemisphere's main ski season really starts to take off. Those resorts that have not yet opened for 2023 should do so in the first days of the month, while many that opened in June will be aiming to reach 100% of slopes open (if they're not there already).

New Zealand Ski Areas Re-opening

It has unfortunately been a poor start to the New Zealand ski season with mild temperatures and rain at lower elevations leading several areas that opened in June to close again and others to delay opening.

Only Cardrona and The Remarkables have managed to stay open, but each only with a small fraction of their full terrain open.
