Riksgransen Ski Area in northern Sweden has opened for its 2017 ski season.

Riksgransen has one of the most unusual ski seasons in the world, opening in late February each year, and then staying open to late June.

Located 200km north of the Arctic Circle it is located in a zone of perpetual darkness for more than two months around mid-winter when the sun stays down below the horizon so is too cold and dark to open when most other other resorts in the northern hemisphere do.

Snow In The Dolomites (And Many Other Parts of Europe)

Published : 06-Feb-2017 11:46

The weekend has seen significant snowfall in much of the Alps as well as the Pyrenees and the Dolomites.

The snow in the latter range of mountains is perhaps most worthy of reporting on as whilst the Alps and the Pyrenees got significant January snowfalls after the (mostly) dry December, the Dolomites (largely) missed out and skiers saw generally green and brown hillsides on each side of their groomed slopes. This was thanks to the region's massive snowmaking arsenal which successfully kept around 90% of slopes open despite the lack of natural snowfall.
