Beijing to Host 2022 Winter Olympics

The IOC has just announced that Beijing will be the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics at its annual meeting, in Kuala Lumpur where the host for the results ceremony was Britain's famous triple jumper Jonathan Edwards.

The results came after a paper ballot was needed when the electronic one failed.

Crystal End Ski Hosting At All Resorts

The UK's biggest ski holiday operator Crystal has decided to end its ski hosting service at all of its resorts and offer its customers an ever improving digital app guide service instead, which it says its research has found is what its customers actually prefer.

Dick Bass Dies

Richard "Dick" Bass, the first man to climb all seven of the highest peaks on seven continents and the co-founder of Snowbird Ski Resort in Utah has died yesterday, July 26th, 2015, in Texas, aged 85.

Bass was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1929 and graduated from Yale University with a degree in geology in 1950 before seeing active service in the Korean War.

Freeze Returns to London as a World Cup Event

The city-centre freestyle snowsport and music festival Freezer is back after a year-off this autumn and is being revamped thanks to Lottery funding in to what the organisers say will be the biggest snowsports event in British history on home snow.

Freeze also has a new venue - London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and a new status as an FIS sanctioned Snowboard World Cup Big Air competition - Freeze Big Air.

Big Snow Down Under

Large snowfalls have been reported in Australia ahead of one of the country's busiest months of the ski season.

Perisher, the nation's largest ski area, recently acquired by Vail Resorts from the US, reported 70ccm of fresh snow in the past 48 hours.

Altitude Comedy Festival Moves To January

The Altitude Comedy Festival will be back for its tenth annual staging this ski season, but is moving forward in the calendar a couple of months for a mid- January staging. Along with most music festivals, Altitude, which started off in Meribel but moved to Mayrhofen, normally had a start-of-spring March time slot.

Ski Club Sign Up With French Ski School To Offer ‘Leading’

The Ski Club of Great Britain which is one of three British-based ski organisations involved in separate long-running legal disputes in France over the use of ski guides, hosts or teachers that do not, the French say, meet their legal requirements, has announced an agreement with a French ski school to provide leader groups and other services on French slopes next winter.

Busy 2016 February School Holidays Forecast

Travel agents and tour operators are warning that February school holiday dates are 'almost' booked up already for next winter 2015-16.

Of course they would say that, but industry expert and boss of specialist operator to unspoilt French ski villages connected to giant French ski areas, Peak Retreats (www.peakretreats.co.uk), Xavier Schouller, confirms that the main British half term week is also the main week for several other countries.

Crystal Customers Donate £69,000 to Disability Snowsport UK

Customers and staff of the UK's largest ski tour operator, Crystal, have donated a total of £69,000 to charity Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK) (www.disabilitysnowsport.org.uk), a £5,000 increase on the money the company donated in 2014.

DSUK is a small national charity with a mission of giving skiers and snowboarders with a disability the opportunity to be able to ski alongside the non-disabled as equals at all ski facilities and resorts.

Big Snowfall To Kick Start Delayed South American Ski Season

Snowfalls which may tally as much as 1.5m (five five) over the next five-six days will hopefully get the ski season started at South American ski areas which have been unable to open for three weeks following their planned 2015 opening dates in mid-June.

New Venue And Format For 2015 London Ski Show

Details of this year's ski and snowboard shows in London have been published by sponsors The Telegraph.

After many years at Earls Court or London Olympia the show will be moving to a new venue at Battersea Park.

Now down to a four day duration it will also run a week later than last year, from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th November 2015.

July has started off hot in much of Europe with temperatures in the mid-30s and above in many cities; whilst on the continent's glaciers temperatures are touching double digits. None the less there are more areas open for summer skiing in France, Italy and Switzerland compared to a month ago.
