Review of Alpbach, Austria

"Not a party town, feels comfortable"

reviewed by Krisb59 *

Learned to ski here with excellent local ski school instructors. English widely spoken helps with lessons. Been back almost every year since. Not a party town so don’t expect wild nights. Traditional town with no high rise development. Comfortable friendly feel, always a warm welcome.

Less bars, restaurants since the covid years (same most places) all with traditional food so not a wide variety of cuisines.

Modern gondolas and lifts with new infrastructure each year manned by good staff. Lift passes aren’t cheap but these days where are they? Only a full area pass available which covers the 4 mountains in the 2 valleys. It takes a bit of effort , planning and a bus ride to get to the far end (Neiderau) if you want to say you’ve ski’d it all . Generally snow sure due to its slopes being protected. More trees on the Alpbach side, Wildschönau is more open with wider pistes.

Good mountain huts for refreshments and good views . Plenty of blues for easy skiing, some great reds not many blacks though. Wouldn’t call it an off piste kind of a place but it’s there if you want to get it, probably more of a ski resort than snow board.

Easy access from Innsbruck by train and bus (bus fare covered by local tourist card if you’ve got a booking for accommodation)

Ski buses run regularly from the town to the 2 gondolas which provide access to both valleys and then ski where you want.

A great place to learn to ski and many people return year after year for 20 plus years !
