The 2012 Winter X Games Remembered - And 2013 Promised

Tignes is reported be feeling something of an "X Games blues" now the biggest event in European snow sports is behind it for another year.

The French resort ran a 21 day build up to the three days of competition which it says attracted 103.600 spectators (including 41.500 people on Thursday only, the day of the men's snowboard SuperPipe final with Shaun White).

Pyrenees Get Most of Europe’s Most Recent Fresh Snowfalls

There's been almost no snow in most of Europe for the past few weeks but one area has been dumped on – the Pyrenees.

Unusually for this time of year, resorts in Andorra have seen up to 70cm (28 inches) of fresh snow over the past week so can claim the most powdery conditions in Europe as we approach Easter.

Easter Melt Down?

Skiers and boarders heading to Europe and North America have been advised to hold their nerves as record high temperature has led to a rapid thaw at many resorts with hundreds closing prematurely for the season. …that's as long as they've followed the pundits advice and booked a stay at a high altitude ski area.

Downhill Bike Race Over Glacier Snow

The Saas Fee Glacier Bike Downhill(http://saasfee.ch/glacierbike) takes place next week on 24th March for the ninth time with a first prize of 7000 Swiss Francs (about £5000) up for grabs.

Mountain biking races in ski resorts are getting increasingly popular in the summertime, but a winter race, over a glacier as well as snow, down 1700 vertical metres from 3500m to 1800m is more unusual.

VAT On Lift Pass Prices Cut In Budget

The cost of a lift ticket on UK slopes may be coming down following the chancellor's decision to cut VAT on passes from 20 to 5% - in line with the policy in mostly other European nations.

This important news was oddly largely unreported by mainstream media and the chancellor even neglected to mention the cut himself in the commons, preferring to focus on talking about raising the personal allowance and cutting the top rate of tax instead.

Big Snow Back in The Alps

After six weeks with little fresh snow in the Alps, today has seen resorts across central Europe report falls of up to 80cm in the past 24 hours.

Most of Europe received heavy, and in some cases record breaking snowfalls during December and January followed by very cold weather in early February and very warm weather in late February and early March – in both cases with little fresh precipitation.

World's Deepest Snowpack Approaches 8 Metres After More Huge Falls

The snow that failed to arrive in California during December and January is now falling with increased abundance raising hopes of an extended ski season for some after all.

Back in the Autumn ski resorts all along the West coast of North America had been hoping for a La Nina year with a repeat of the huge falls on winter 2010-11. However although resorts in states to the north – Alaska, British Columbia, Washington state and Wyoming have had a consistently good winter, the snow failed to arrive in more southerly states.

Big Snow Festival Ready to Party in Sauze d'Oulx

The final acts have just been announced for this year's The Big Snow Festival 2012 in Sauze d'Oulx, Italy in just over a week's time (25th March to 1st April 2012).

The event, which begain in Andorra three years ago, planned to move to Serbia this winter but about a month ago decided instead to re-locate to the famouis Italian ski party town, is famed for its loyal following and for not taking the snowsports too seriously, with a high proportion of first time skiers and boarders in attendance.

Snow Forecast Summary - 15th March 2012

The main weather feature of the past seven days, on both sides of the Atlantic, has been early Spring conditions - with temperatures 5C to 10C above average.

Although this has diminished snow cover, particularly at low levels, high level resorts continue to benefit from the big snows earlier in the season.

More Music In The Mountains

The list of music festivals in the Alps seems to just keep getting longer. Coming up in the next six weeks we've got Meribel Live; Zermatt Unplugged; Chamonix's Weekender, Bryan Adams and Kim Wilde on the slopes above Wengen and Grindelwald in the Swiss Jungfrau; Dizzee Rascal and Fat Boy Slim headlining Mayrhofen's Snowbombing; the Big Snow festival now wisely moved from the proposed Serbian venue to good old Sauze d'Oulx; the Brits in Laax and at the end of it all, on the last weekend of April, and as yet un-named superstar will be performing at the Top Of The mountain concert at Ischgl in Austria following on from Kylie, Rihanna, Elton and the rest.

Canadian skier Nick Zoricic dies in World Cup skicross race

Dreadful news from the World Cup skicross event held in Grindelwald, Switzerland on Saturday.

The Canadian Ski Cross athlete Nick Zoricic crashed heavily during the Ski Cross event in Grindelwald on March 10th, 2012 and died as a result of the injuries he suffered.

Snow Forecast Summary - 8th March 2012

This past week has seen mostly settled weather with a fair amount of sunshine and generally great skiing conditions. Scattered snows have freshened up the runs on both sides of the Atlantic, and it's reported to be still snowing (albeit relatively lightly) in parts of the Austrian Alps tonight.

Golf on the Snow

Anyone frustrated by the lack of a golf course at their ski destination (they're often there, buried by snow under the nursery slope, cross country ski loop or ice rink) will be delighted to hear that Engelberg (www.engelberg.ch) in Switzerland will be staging its popular annual Winter Golf Tournament this Friday, 9th March.

Avalanche Safety Camps in Austria

It is snowing again in Austria this week as the country, like most of the reest of the Alps, continues to enjoy one of the best winters in years for snowfall.

But the Tirol Tourist Board have warned that while it can be easy to get carried away with the excitement of fresh powder, heavy snowfall over a short period of time can also increase the risk of avalanche danger.

Don't look now (actually, do) but winter might be back...

Temperatures dropped dramatically overnight, across most of the North and Eastern Alps... and came with a little snow.

NNIXSY's already reported new snow in Les Menuires, and here's a shot from Chamonix town (avec neige) just now...

Looking around the webcams this morning; the snow has not got everywhere yet, although quite a few ski areas in Austria, France and Switzerland are either white or showing cloud/fog.

Heavy Snow Across North America, Warm, In The Alps

There's probably not a huge chance that we'll see a repeat of last year's July 4th opening of around 10 California resorts following their record breaking winter 2010-11, but the good news is that Western USA has received its biggest snowfalls this season over the past week.
