A ski resort in the desert? Yes, that is what is being planned in Saudi Arabia at the new Trojena ski resort.

Plans have been progressing quickly and earlier this month, the resort tested its snowmaking facilities for the first time.

Trojena around 50 kilometres from the Gulf of Aqaba coast in a mountainous area with the highest peaks at around 2600m. The resort claims that temperatures are often close to the freezing point overnight.

The plan is that there will be over 30 kilometres of slopes on offer, opening in 2026. It's hoped that Trojena will attract 700,000 skiers and 7,000 permanent residents.

The resort has already been selected to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

An official from Trojena said:

"Outdoor skiing is a unique feature of Trojena that will provide a unique experience never before witnessed in the region, especially in Gulf countries known for their desert climates.

Amateurs and professionals alike will be able to enjoy the many ski runs of various difficulties with an array of contrasting and breath-taking views.

The blue waters of the Red Sea, beauty of the Neom mountain ranges and the golden desert sand dunes will provide skiers a first-of-its-kind experience that combines these diverse environments with fun-filled and adventurous moments."
