A Foot of Snow Falls in the Alps This Weekend

A Foot of Snow Falls in the Alps This Weekend

Published : 26-Aug-2018 09:11

Up top 30cm of fresh snowfall has been reported above 3000 metres in the Alps this weekend as a cold front crosses central Europe.

The Hintertux glacier – which was forecast to receive 35cm of snow by Monday – has reported the biggest accumulation so far. It endeavours to open for snowsports 365 days a year so a summer powder day is now on the cards. It is pictured above this morning.

The Stubai glacier – one of half-a-dozen aiming to open in the next 2-3 weeks for their 2018-19 ski season – also published images of deep snow. The snow has fallen above 2000m over a wide area but it's so far unclear exactly how much has fallen where. Zermatt, which is also open as was expecting 5cm of snow, appears to have revised that stat down to zero.

The unusual weather has not been good news everywhere in the skiing world though with the centre of one of Austria's largest resorts, Saalbach Hinterglemm, having an emergency evacuation as flash floods hit a fewc days ago.

More normal weather and tewmperatures for late summer in expected to resume over the next few days.
