150km Charity Endurance Ski Race Launched

Snow-Camp, a registered charity supporting over 600 disadvantaged young people in inner-London by providing a combination of snow sport and life- skills training, has launched a fund-raiser it has called the Everest Challenge.
Participants in the 150km endurance event gives snow sport enthusiasts the opportunity to fundraise for Snow-Camp by skiing or snowboarding over a set 150km course over two days. Participants - which Snow-Camp hopes will exceed 60 people - will be guided through a range of peaks and valleys. The course includes a night ski/board stage and a night mountain hike, flights, accommodation and food

Ice Festival Time At Engelberg

Engelberg no longer offers summer skiing, but the famous Swiss resorts does now stage an annual Ice festival on the eternal snow of the Titlis Glacier.
This year's festival takes place on Sunday, July 11 and for a flat rate entrance fee participants can try lots of activities on snow – except skiing and boarding.

Mammoth Invite You To Ski, Bike and Play Golf in the Same Day

Mammoth Mountain in California, which is still offering snow sports, recently began their summer biking and golf operations and have launched the Mammoth 3-Way Challenge.
"Have you lived the California Dream and skied and surfed in the same day? It's time to take it to the next level. The Mammoth 3-Way Challenge is like nothing you've experienced." said a resort statement.

Third Italian Summer Ski Option Opens For Season

Three glacier ski areas are now open in Italy following the re-opening of Val Senales at the weekend. It joins Passo Stelvio and the Presena glacier above Passo Tonale, which had one red and one black run open at the weekend but is likely to close in the near future. However Cervinia will re-open a week on Saturday for summer skiing and boarding keeping the Italian choices up at three.

Dachstein Open for Summer Skiing after Two Week Delay

The Dachstein glacier in southern Austria has re-opened for summer skiing, two weeks later than planned. A technical issue following the replacement of the steel cable, for the first time since the lift was installed in 1969, on the Dachstein access cable car led to the postponed opening. As a gesture of good will operators the Planai-Hochwurzen-Railways decided to lower season-ticket prices.

Snow in Australia Gets The Season Started

Fresh snow across Australia's ski areas helped get the season off to a positive start last weekend when the country's resorts began opening for winter 2010. Temperatures were low for the best part of a month allowing for plenty of pre-season snowfall and with 10-15cm (4-6 inches) of natural snowfall just before the resorts were scheduled to open, it's been a very good start to the season.

French Glacier Ski Areas Opening This Week

Les 2 Alpes became the first of France's three ski areas - that still offer summer glacier skiing and boarding - to open, last Wednesday, June 16th.
The lists open from 7.15am daily until the 28th August; the resort reports there is currently 2.4m (eight feet) of snow lying on the glacier.

Cairngorm Season Finally Ends - this coming Monday

Cairngorm Mountain above Aviemore in Scotland has finally decided to call it a day on their 2009-10 ski season after opening in June for the first time in 18 years.
Although final figures are yet to be published, it appears winter 2009-10 will have been one of the area's most successful for 20 years, with the lifts operating on around 150 days during the past eight months.

Canadian Resort Offers Summer Skiing For The First Time

In surprise news a second Canadian resort will be joining Whistler for snow sports next weekend. The Blackcomb glacier re-opens for summer snow sports from June 19th through to July 25th, but over on Vancouver Island, Mount Washington has also announced it will re-open its snow slopes, at least for the weekend of June19th/20th, at the start of its summer season.

Valle Nevado Adds Two Lifts and Five Runs

New run named "I'm In a Meeting."
Chile's Valle Nevado opens for its 2010 ski season this week with two new lifts allowing the creation of five new intermediate and advanced difficulty slopes including blue, red and black runs.
One of the ski-lifts is a double chairlift that is located in the Ballicas sector, the other a T-bar lift that climb to the highest part of the mountain in the Valle del Inca area, opening slopes of in a stunning location.

NZ Fatal Avalanche Inquest Timed For Effect

The Otago Daily Times reports that...
The inquest into the death of Queenstown snowboarder Ryan Manu Campbell (30), who was crushed in a back-country avalanche last year, was deliberately timed for the start of the snowsports season "to point out to mountain users the dangers are real", the coroner said yesterday.

Excess Snowfall Triggers Unfortunate Series Of Events Culminating In Indoor Snow Centre Bankruptcy
The SnowDome De Uithof in the Netherland has filed for bankruptcy following a spate of major operational problems.
The centre, which was the country's fifth to open, ten years ago, first saw the roof of the adjoining ice rink collapse last winter due to the weight of snow.

Canadian Ski Resort Le Massif Upgrades

Work to improve and expand Le Massif ski area by the St Lawrence River in Quebec Canada is underway ahead of winter 2010-11.
The ski area is due to be transformed over the next few years following a $230m spend with expansion on the mountain, new lifts, a new base resort and a new railway line connection.

Another High Speed Quad For Sunshine

Just weeks after their long 09-10 ski season ended in late May, Sunshine Mountain at Banff is starting work on installing a high-speed quad chairlift, bought second hand from Whistler where it was in use for the Olympic Games. The Alberta resort's 'Strawberry quad' will be in action for next winter 2010-11.

Baqueira Beret Spending €6m+ On New 6 Seater Chairlift
Spain's leading resort, Baqueira Beret, has announced that it will install a new six-seater chairlift this summer ahead of winter 2010-11.
Baqueira Beret is investing 6.5 million euros on the new Doppelmayr chairlift, which will be named after the resort's founder, Jorge Pozas Jordan. Jordan was the main founder and promoter of Baqueira Beret of which he was President from its foundation in 1962 until his death in1999.

The southern hemisphere's 2010 ski season is under way with Coronet peak in New Zealand opening Saturday, June 5th with a 50cm (20 inch) base including 15cm (six inches) of new snow that fell on Tuesday. Thousands of Queenslanders hit the piste to celebrate.

A fortnight later on June 21st Northern Scotland celebrates the start of summer with near-24 hour daylight, thanks to the region's northerly latitude.
