26-27 Ski Season Underway in Finland

Finland's ski season began this morning with Levi and Ruka both opening on stored snow preserved since last winter. Both centres plan to keep going now for more than 200 days/7 months through to May 2027, among the longest seasons in the world.
Ruka, a pioneer of snow farming, says that about 80% of its 150,000 m³ stockpile that was covered by a layer of sawdust, insulating fabric and Snow Secure plastic made it through the summer for it to be able to spread back out on its slopes. Levi is reported to have stored about double that amount on its Front Slopes and Levi Black race terrain.
Levi opened Zero Point at 09:00 and the Front Slopes at 09:30, while Ruka launched skiing on its Saarua slopes with three lifts running. Both centres also have cross country trails and snow park features available. With only very limited terrain ope at a few glacier centres in the Alps at present, Finland may have more skiable terrain currently open than any other northern hemisphere country. That could change tomorrow though with several Austrian glaciers due to open and Saas-Fee expected to re-open.
The weather in Lapland was misty and murky at both resorts this morning, but operations proceeded as planned, with morning testing events drawing early visitors.
