Powder Alarm in the Alps The Day Before Summer

Austria's year=round glacier ski destination of Hintertux has issued a powder alarm after passing 20cm (8 inches) of snowfall in the last 24 hours.

The ski area, one of five glaciers currently open for skiing and snowboarding in the Alps, said the snow was still falling heavily this lunchtime, with tomorrow, June 1st, the first day of summertime by the meteorological measure of the seasons.

New 'Northern Snow Show' This October

The company that runs the ChillFactore indoor snow centre near Manchester has announced it will host a snow show on the first weekend of October this year.

Being staged partly on the centre's real indoor snow slope, the UK's longest, snow-goers will be able to test equipment and talk to manufacturers as well as receive discounted lift tickets and lessons. Admission to the show will be free of charge. The show will also include a host of talks led by industry professionals.

Most Chilean Resorts Opening 3 Weeks Early

Two of Chile's biggest and best-known ski areas have joined the list of centres in the country that are opening 3-5 weeks early for their 2024 seasons after big snowfalls and cold weather through May.

Three resorts have already opened earlier this month and two more, La Parva and El Colorado, had announced they're opening this coming weekend for their 24 seasons. Now one of the country's oldest and best known resorts. Portillo (pictured above earlier this month), says it will open for its 75th season from this weekend after 6 feet (1.8m) of snowfall last week. In addition one of the most modern, Valle Nevado, is opening from Friday, 31st May, saying it has four feet (1.2m) of snow lying.

Ski Trip to Iraqi Kurdistan

Untamed Borders, which organises trips to off-the-beaten-track destinations, including for skiing adventures, has announced that it'll be heading back to Iraq next winter on a four-day trip.

In February 2025 the company will be returning to the slopes in the mountains in the north of the country and visit Iraq's highest mountain Halgurd.

Ski Club of Great Britain Estimate 1.8 Million ‘Active’ British Skiers

The Ski Club of Great Britain, which now carries out surveys of British skier habits several times a year in conjunction with a number of ski industry partners, believes that the number of people going skiing from the UK is back to pre-pandemic levels and the best since 2018.

Quebec Ski Area Plans New Chairlift Thanks to $5m Grant

Mont Sutton ski area, located down near the US border in southern Quebec, has won a $5,000,000 subsidy from the Quebec government's Tourism Industry Recovery Assistance Program (known as PARIT).[/b]

The bulk of the grant will be invested in a new quad chairlift equipped with a boarding carpet, to be positioned on the ski area's west side, replacing the three existing lifts in this sector with the higher capacity, faster and easier to use new lift.

Chile To Have Most Centres Open In World As Season Starts Early

Chile is set to post the most ski centres of any country in the world for the last few days of May and first week of June as at least five of the country's resorts open early for their 2024 season following huge snowfalls in the Andes.

May 2024 has been one of the snowiest months in recent history in Argentina and Chile with some areas seeing more than three metres (10 feet) of snowfall from multiple storms through the month. It's also been a cold month on the whole with temperatures consistently at or below freezing for most of it.

Polish Skier Completes Fifth Descent From 8,000m+ Peak

Polish skier Bartek Ziemski has skied his fifth 8,000m+ peak of the 14 that exist in the world, all, of course, in the Himalaya.

Ziemski skied Makalu (8,485m), the world's fifth highest peak, earlier this week, repeating a feat achieved by American extreme ski mountaineer Adrian Ballinger two years ago, although Ziemski is reported to have been able to make his descent from the very summit, whereas Ballinger began skiing 15 metres below the very top.

Skiing in Arizona in June

The Arizona Snowbowl ski area says it will open on Saturday, June 1st for the latest closing date that the state of Arizona have ever seen.

The resort is currently one of 9 US ski centres in six US states that is still operating in late May, more than any other country, however most of these have said they'll be ending their seasons at the end of next Monday, the Memorial Day holiday in the US, leaving only a couple of others likely to stay open into June.

Norwegian Summer Glacier Resort to Open Early "Whilst Snow Lasts"

Norway's Stryn glacier summer ski area says it will open for its 2024 season this Saturday, a week earlier than planned.

The centre, one of three in the country, has warned though that its opening early because very warm spring weather means the snow there is melting "at a record rate" and says that the season will "again be short."

Summer Ski Centre Delays Opening Due To Too Much Snow

[b]Italy's Passo Stelvio ski area looks set to delay its planned 2024 season opening, scheduled for the weekend after next, as there's "too much" snow lying and high avalanche danger.

A resort spokesperson said the amount of snow lying on the pass was "the most for a long time" and a hotel at the base area announced it was postponing its opening date until June 8th, having originally planned for May 31st.

Finland’s Levi Sees Record Business With UK Biggest International Market

Levi in Finnish Lapland uses snowfarming to ensure a seven-month winter ski season with snow guaranteed from early October to early May.

That policy has paid off, the resort, Finland's largest, says, with record business in the 23-24 season which ended earlier this month. They did especially well at the start of the season, from October to December last autumn, when Alpine glaciers opened later than usual, in many cases not until late November.

Australian Ski Resorts Making Snow For 2024 Season Launch

Australian ski areas have begun snowmaking ahead of the start of their 2024 ski season, which for most is three weeks away this weekend.

Snowmaking teams have been hard at work overnight firing up snowmaking systems to give Mother Nature a helping hand. Below freezing temperatures as low as -5C and some natural snowfall has helped efforts.

Scotland’s Former Indoor Snow Centre to Become eKarting Centre

The former indoor snow centre at Braehead near Glasgow in Scotland is to reopen as an indoor karting centre, it has been announced.

Most recently known as Snow Factor, but originally built as Xscape by a group which also built the still operating (but for many years now separately run) Snozone indoor snow centres in Milton Keynes and Castleford (between Leeds and Hull), the facility closed down in autumn 2022 blaming high energy costs as well as ongoing maintenance, and repair needs.

Australian Resort Adds 5th All-Weather Snowmaking Machine

Mt Buller ski area in Australia has taken delivery of its fifth SnowFactory all-weather snowmaking machine, believed to be the most in action simultaneously anywhere in the world.

SnowFactories produce a snowlike mix of crushed ice, creating the snow within their refrigerated interiors at about -9C ready to spray out on to the slopes whatever the temperature.

The 2024 ski season has got underway in the southern hemisphere three weeks earlier than expected, following big autumn snowfalls in South america.

Catedral ski area near Bariloche in Argentina (pictured above this weekend) has had over 2 metres of snowfall on higher slopes and have opened early for the season after weeks of cold weather and heavy snowfall. Initially there's just limited terrain open.

New Niseko Gondola Next Winter

Niseko's main ski sector, Grand Hirafu, is to get a new gondola next winter.

The new Hirafu gondola will replace the famous Japanese resort's Ace Quad Lift #2 Center 4 quad chairlift, which is the resort's oldest and would have turned 40 in 2025.

Record May Snowfalls in US West

Still-open ski centres in the western US have seen record snow accumulations for May in the last few days.

The Palisades reported over two-feet (60cm) of snowfall in 24 hours on Saturday/Sunday and the high Sierra Nevada region in California posted its heaviest May snowfalls on record.

Finnish Resorts Complete 7 Month Ski Seasons

Levi and Ruka ski resorts in Finland have completed seven-month winter seasons, the longest in Europe for resorts that don't have glaciers.

In total the two areas were each open for 212 days during their 23-24 ski seasons, closing at the end of the ski day yesterday.

Vail Resorts Complete Purchase of Second Swiss Resort

Vail Resorts have announced that they've completed the purchase of Crans Montana, their second Swiss resort, joining Andermatt on their Epic Pass, global season ticket. The company now own about 50 ski areas in North America, Switzerland and Australia.

Star Wars Costume Discount in Canada

Skiers or boarders turning up to ride the slopes of a number of still-open Canadian ski resorts can get a discounted lift pass if they arrive in full Star Wars costume.

'May The Forth' is widely regarded as 'Star Wars Day' and at Marmot Basin ski area near Jasper and Sunshine near Banff, both in Alberta, Canada and among the five areas still open in the country for the 24-25 season, dressing up as a Star Wars character on the snow translates into a lift pass discount.

Scottish Ski Centre Launches Crowdfunder to “Survive”

Scottish ski area The Lecht has set up a crowd funding page suggesting that without public donations they may not be able to continue operating.

Scottish ski areas had another poor winter for snowfall and The Lecht was one of several that were only able to operate a small snow area that existed only thanks to a so-called "all-weather snowmaking" machine. This allowed it to operate a nursery slope and give beginner lessons. It reports it managed to deliver lessons to over 6,500 children this winter despite the limited terrain available.

The old Mt Perisher double chair is being replaced with a new six-seater chairlift. The old lift was Perisher's first ever chairlift and opened in 1961.

New 4 Vallées Lift Sets Records

The new "Telemixte de la Matze" lift at Thyon ski resort at the eastern end of Switzerland's largest ski area, Les 4 Vallées, has transformed access to the region, the resort claims.

"With a total of 28 six-seater chairs and eight 10-seater panoramic gondolas designed by Studio F. A. Porsche, the new lift significantly enhances the skiing offering of the family ski area. At the same time, the facility has improved year-round connectivity between the lower settlement areas and the summit complex Thyon 2000 at 2100 meters, making the eastern access to the "Les 4 Vallées" ski area much more attractive," a resort spokesperson said, noting that it means the local lift company will carry a million visitors this year. Passenger numbers are up +35%, skier days +22%.
