Breckenridge Peak 8 Evolution Includes Latest “SuperChair”

The start of the ski season in Breckenridge is just six weeks away and the resort, one of America's highest and home to the world's highest chairlift, has already seen several snowfalls this September (picture above was taken 21 September).
This winter there are upgrades at the Peak 8 base. On the heels of installing the newly upgraded Rip's Ride in 2022, now for the 2023/24 winter season, this winter will see a new, dedicated learning area plus the upgrade of 5-Chair to a new, high-speed quad – the Five SuperChair.

Levi Begins Spreading Out 130 000 m³ of Snow

Finland's largest ski resort of Levi will begin the task of spreading 130 000 m³ of stored snow out on its front slopes today, Friday 29th September.
The resort, along with fellow Finnish ski centre, Ruka, plan to open for their 23-24 seasons next Friday 6th October.

La Plagne Pushes Rail or Bus Access

La Plagne, one of the world's most popular ski resorts and thus generating hundreds of thousands of flight seats each winter as skiers fly to Geneva or Chambery to get to it, is making a concerted effort to promote low carbon travel to its ten village bases, particularly by rail or bus.

December Flight Numbers Back Close to Pre-Pandemic Levels

Data from analysts Cirium published by holiday company Ski Solutions has revealed that flight numbers from December 2023 are the close yet to those for December 2019, signalling a post pandemic 'return to normal' for ski holidays by air.
In total the number of flights is 96% of the level it was four years ago prior to the pandemic with some destinations more popular than they were back then. For all but one destination, the December 2023 flight numbers are actually greater than December 2019.

Aspen Terrain Expansion Christened: Hero’s

An expansion of terrain on Aspen Mountain on terrain formerly known as 'Pandora's' has been rechristened 'Hero's' ahead of the resort's opening day scheduled for Thursday 23 November.
Hero's will increase skiable acreage on Aspen Mountain by more than 20% and will be served by a new high-speed quad chairlift.

Snowfall For The Alps to Start Autumn & New Zealand For Spring

There have been healthy snowfalls reported on ski slopes on both sides of the world for what is the first day of autumn/fall (by the astronomical measure of the seasons) in the northern hemisphere, and of spring in the southern hemisphere.
In the southern hemisphere a major storm in New Zealand left 40-50cm of fresh snowfall to the delight of skiers this morning.

Australia’s Ski Season Ending Early

The last ski area still open in Australia has announced it is giving up trying to keep operating and will close its slopes for 2023 after a final day's skiing on Monday, September 25th.
Perisher, which has the country's largest ski area and until recently had been posting a metre plus of snow depth, has succumbed to the double digit plus temperatures which have led most of the country's other ski areas to close in the past week.

Sit Skiers Target World Record In DSUK Fundraiser

A group of skiers are attempting to claim the world record for the furthest skied using seated equipment.
They'll be making their attempt at the Chill Factore indoor snow centre in Manchester on Monday 25th September – as part of a bid to raise vital funds for the charity that enables them to ski, Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK).

Dolomiti Superski Week’s Lift Pass Tops €400

An adult 6 day high season lift pass will cost €404 for everyone aged 16 to 70 for Italy's Dolomiti Superski this winter, the first time the week's lift pass price has broken though the €400 barrier.
The region is one of the world's largest, depending on how you measure it, with 1200km of partially lift-linked slopes served by 450 lifts. There are 890 individual ski slopes.

New chairlifts for Kitzbuhel

[b]The lift company in Kitzbuhel is replacing the older ski lifts known as F6 Gauxjoch and F7 Trattenbach with modern 6-seater chairlifts.
Unusually, the system can be controlled via remote control during maintenance work. Lift company employees can use the radio remote control directly from the maintenance hanger to operate all relevant function, such as starting the system, carrying out an emergency stop, driving forwards or backwards, accelerating and reducing the driving speed.

Snowfall on Alpine Glaciers & Lapland

There's been some fresh snowfall on glaciers in the Alps in the past 24 hours, while Finland's largest ski resort, Levi, has reported snowfall down to resort level this morning (pictured below).
The timing for both is good with four more Alpine glaciers due to open for their 23-24 seasons over the final weekends of September, the first Austria Pitztal this Saturday and Levi as well as Ruka in Finland on October 6th in a fortnight's time.

Davos Piste “Rewilded”

Many ski resorts are announcing new ski slopes for the upcoming season, but unusually Davos Klosters have announced they're taking a ski run out of service and "rewilding" the area instead.
The resort's FIS Ischalp slalom run is no longer needed and has been reforested, giving more than 10,000 square metres of the mountainside back to nature.

Europe’s Autumn Glacier Ski Season Starts Saturday

Alpine glaciers will begin opening this weekend for the start of their 23-24 ski seasons.
The Pitztal glacier in the Austrian Tirol has confirmed it will open this weekend.
Its announcement comes as temperatures fall and snow is forecast for glaciers this week after the first fortnight of September saw some very warm temperatures after a late August snowfall, leading to Italy's Passo Stelvio, which had closed briefly but reopened due to that summer snowfall, deciding to close for a second time this summer.

Australian Resort Ends 2023 Season a Fortnight Early

Australia's Thredbo Resort has announced that it has closed for the season two weeks earlier than planned due to the continuing warm conditions. Mt Buller is also closed.
After a snowy month in the first month to the 2023 season after a delayed start in early June for many, temperatures have been warmer than average for much of July, August and September with just a few snowfalls. Overnight lows did allow for snowmaking however and there was a 20-30cm accumnulation a week ago for most areas

More Pre-Season Snowfall in Colorado

High slopes in Colorado have had a fresh dusting of snowfall less than a week after they saw their first snow covering of late summer/early fall.
Arapahoe Basin posted the picture above of its Montezuma Bowl chairlift. Other ski areas posting similarly snowy scenes included Aspen, Copper Mountain, Crested Butte and Keystone as well as Loveland, pictured below.

First Snowfall of 23-24 in Colorado

[b]Ski resorts in Colorado have reported their first snowfall on high peaks of the 23-24 pre-season today.
Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge (above) and Copper Mountain (below) were among the first to post snowy images.
The snowfall follows the first snowfall last week at ski areas around Banff in Alberta and prior to that snowfall at ski areas including Alta and Snowbird in Utah and ski areas in Oregon.

A strong El Niño system on the Pacific ocean is an increasingly strong probability for the winter ahead, influencing weather including snow conditions across North America and some believe further afield.
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and is associated with a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and eastern Pacific. It exchanges dominance with colder counterpart La Niña. Each can be 'strong' 'weak' or hardly noticed either way.

New Survey shows UK Snowsports Market will grow by 14% in 2023/24

[b]A new survey by ski chalet specialist Le Ski predicts that the UK snowsports market will grow by 14% this winter.
The survey was conducted by YouGov for Le Ski during August 2023 and showed that 1.12 million British skiers and snowboarders took to the slopes last winter. An additional 160,000 holidaymakers will join them this coming winter, bringing the total up to 1.28 million – an increase of 14%.

Fresh Aussie Snowfall Extends Season

Australia's warmer-than-we'd-like latter half of its 2023 season has had a bit of good news with up to 20cm of snowfall reported in the last 24 hours.
The wintery weather was accompanied by a fresh temperature drop to -5C overnight, allowing for snowmaking systems to fire up too.

Summer Snowfall in the Canadian Rockies

Ski areas around Banff in the Canadian Rockies are the latest North American ski resorts to report fresh snowfall in the final weeks of summer.
There are currently no ski areas open for skiing or boarding in North America, other than the indoor Big SNOW centre in New Jersey, but late summer light snowfall has been reported over the past few weeks on high slopes in Oregon and Utah in the Western US and New Hampshire in the East.

First 23-24 Snowfall in Utah

Utah's ski areas have reported their first snowfall of meteorological autumn ahead of the 23-24 ski season.
Alta Ski Area (which posted the pictured below) posted, "We like our summers short and our winters long—today we received our first snowfall of the 2023–24 season," noting it was 74 days until the centre is due to open for its new ski season.

“It’s Not Snow” Says Portuguese Ski Area

The only ski area in Portugal, Serra da Estrela, has posted images of its buildings and ski slopes turned white at the start of September.
However the centre stressed that this wasn't snowfall but a freak heavy hail storm, giving a similar impression.

Snowfall on High Slopes in Eastern and Western US

US ski areas on each side of the country have reported light and temporary dustings of snow on their highest slopes over the last few days.
In Oregon, Mt Hood Meadows posted the image above of some fresh snow there and in New Hampshire the ski touring destination of Mt Washington said it had snow few a few hours overnight to start September.

New Beginner Park Opens At Zermatt

Zermatt and Cervinia have unveiled a new year-round snow fun park located between the two resorts at Plateau Rosa.
The new SnowXperience Plateau Rosa beginner park, located on the Italian border next to the valley station of the new Matterhorn Glacier Ride II lift, which opened two months ago, will be partially operational from 1st September.
